The somewhat inexplicable is hereby explained!

Okay, I don't begrudge Obama his Nobel bling. God knows it makes a nice change for the other 300 million of us. I do think it is a bit premature, and am puzzled. However, my friend Catherine alerted me to this explanation, and I have to admit the evidence is compelling. (I checked: it's fine to post it as long as I include this link back to the original.)

More and more I am becoming convinced the award is given because of hope. So much of Obama's Presidency seems to be defined by hope - hope for healthcare reform, race reform, peace in the middle east, Afghanistan, Iraq etc., the end of global warming and who know what else - maybe the end of losing socks in the wash or something.

There hasn't been this much hope in the air since Clinton. The one thing we can all cling to is that Obama has a more established moral centre than the lad from Arkansas. It would still be a hell of a disappointment if his Presidency doesn't live up to what everyone wants though. he's only human after all - I hope.

And, of course, though hope is a sweet place to be for a while, one doesn't want to get stuck there permanently - that the best way to get decay ;-)
