Extreme fantasticity.

I hadn't been planning to post on Christmas Day, but Margaret got a Bill Bailey DVD, and on it was this:

I think you will agree, when you watch it, that it perfectly illustrates the Christmas spirit. The world needs more of this sort of thing. Much, much more. And not just music, either: terrific stories, fabulous sculptures and paintings, beautiful photographs, marvelous dances. See what you can do to help the cause!

I agree, Laura. The arts carry universal messages tht are not limited by language, conditioning or concepts. Maybe we should insist that all state leaders and all ambassadors should be competent in an artistic sphere:-)

One particularly intriguing example is Vytautas Landsbergis, who was the first head of state in post-Communist Lithuania, and a conservatory-trained musician. You can read about him here and here, to start with.

In an interesting Landsbergis sidebar, during my travels in the then-Soviet Union, I happened to be watching television at a friend's apartment, and Landsbergis came on a political talk show. My Russian was only just at the level of tourist Russian, so I couldn't understand much of what was going on (although my friend's mom, also watching, kept nodding and saying in Russian, "Ah, very diplomatic", so I guess he was making an impression.) And then they brought Landsbergis over to a piano — and he's a bloody good player.
