Simon Pegg rules.

See Hot Fuzz. It's out on video. Don't read the Wikipedia article, because it spoils the whole plot, without a spoiler warning. (Luckily I watched the film first.) Everything Simon Pegg does, he does well, from Shaun of the Dead to his remarkable appearance on the amazingly good Black Books.

We get more British comedy here (in Australia, that is, but also in our house) than is readily available back home in the States, is how I know about Black Books. But at least the two movies did appear in American theatres. (I could take or leave Shaun of the Dead, although I know it's supposed to be heresy to say so, but Hot Fuzz rocks.)

We saw "Hot Fuzz" in the theater after anxiously awaiting its release here for months. It was worth the wait. Simon Pegg was also great in a short lived TV series called "Spaced" which showed up on BBC America about a year ago. I highly recommend it if you haven't seen it yet.

Oddly, I don't think "Spaced" has gotten here (Australia). But we have been enjoying Hyperdrive.

We rented Hot Fuzz ourselves last weekend and liked it a lot. My favorite is Shaun, though!

Simon Pegg? I've put some of his things in the Netflix queue - thanks for the recommendations.

And while we are on the subject of Zombies, we listened to an excellent audio book called World War Z. It's not a parody - it's a "what if" sort of telling of how people - and the world - cope with a pandemic. Wikipedia: it's "a collection of individual accounts, each revealing an aspect of the larger plot and simultaneously presenting a very personal tale."

And if you are still in the mood for sobering reading, try The Road by Cormac McCarthy. It won the Pulitzer in 2006. We just finished listening to that audio book and the reader was excellent. Again Wikipedia: "It is a post-apocalyptic tale describing a journey taken by a father and his young son."

Audio books? Yes, Tim and I commute together and we really like it.

Correction: "Spaced" is here, on the ABC's secondary digital channel (ABC meaning public broadcasting, of course).

I try to stay away from harrowing, thoughtful, highly emotional books -- I have enough challenge dealing with my very nice life, let alone go looking for angst. I'm not that robust....

no, no!

She of the State Emergency Service!

You must be in training for the Zombie wars! Surely some class (Advanced Canabalism Prevention?) has taught you how to escape seven circling zombies with only a Swiss Army knife and your wits?

Now the knife sounds useful....
